General information only

The content of this site is patient education. It describes why the midline can separate, how the contributors are told apart, and what treatment costs in time, recovery and risk. It is not a diagnosis, it is not a treatment recommendation for any individual, and it does not create a doctor-patient relationship.

No substitute for examination

How wide your gap is, whether the band between the muscles is still substantial, whether anything is pushing through it and how much of the bulge is fat or skin are findings that can only be established by examining you. Reading this site cannot substitute for that, and a plan made from a website alone is a plan made without information.

Results vary and are not guaranteed

Individual results differ, and no surgeon and no website can guarantee an outcome. A physiotherapy programme narrows some gaps and not others, and a repair closes a midline without restoring the strength of the wall or preventing a new gap after a further pregnancy. Any statement that appears to promise more than that should be treated with suspicion wherever you encounter it.

If something is wrong after surgery

If you have had abdominal surgery and develop rapidly increasing swelling or pain, spreading redness, fever, bleeding that does not stop, a wound that opens, vomiting, or a bulge that becomes tender and will not reduce, contact the treating team or seek emergency care immediately rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
